Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly decided that Manuel Neuer will return as the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming World Cup.
According to reports, Nagelsmann has already informed Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann about the decision following speculation that Neuer is preparing to come out of international retirement.
Baumann had been Germany’s regular starter throughout the World Cup qualifying campaign and appeared on course to retain the position heading into the tournament before the unexpected development surrounding Neuer’s potential return.
Despite reportedly being disappointed by the decision, Baumann is said to have assured Nagelsmann that he remains committed to the national team and will continue to make himself available for selection even if he loses his starting role.

Neuer initially retired from international football after Euro 2024, bringing an end to a remarkable chapter with Germany after earning 124 caps for the national side. However, recent reports suggest the veteran goalkeeper is now ready to return for one final major tournament.
The Bayern Munich star is currently dealing with a minor injury suffered during his club’s 5-1 victory over Köln at the weekend. The issue has placed him in some doubt for the upcoming DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart.
However, the injury is not believed to be serious enough to threaten his participation at the World Cup. Germany’s coaching staff reportedly remain confident that Neuer will be fully fit in time for the tournament.
If confirmed, Neuer’s return would represent a major boost in experience and leadership for Germany, with Nagelsmann seemingly trusting the veteran goalkeeper’s pedigree on the biggest stage despite Baumann’s strong performances during qualification.
