German coach won’t reveal targets but expects “No 9 who fits our philosophy”
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick says replacing departing striker Robert Lewandowski will be one of the club’s biggest priorities ahead of next season.
Lewandowski said farewell to supporters at Camp Nou on Sunday after the 3-1 victory over Real Betis. He will be leaving the club at the end of the season after four years in Catalonia..
Flick admitted it would be difficult to fill the void that will be left by the veteran forward but said the club’s recruitment focus was clear.
“I’m happy for the send-off Robert has had,” Flick said. “He’s a great person and a top player. We need to look for a No 9 who fits our philosophy, but the most important thing is that he scores goals.”
The German coach did not reveal potential transfer targets, insisting the club would take their time before making a decision.
“We have to wait,” Flick said. “What I’m convinced of is that we have very good players who have given us and will give us a lot.”
On Lewandowski’s final home appearance, Flick said: “It could have been the perfect night with Robert’s goal, so it was almost perfect. I’ve worked with him for many years and he’s a friend. It was very emotional.
“His heart is in Barcelona and with this club. I thank him. He’s a fantastic person and a world-class player.”
Barcelona’s victory also secured a Spanish record. It made them the first side to finish the season having won all 19 home games in the league.
“I’m very proud of the team,” Flick said. “We achieved our goal, which was to win all 19 home games. We struggled more in the second half. It’s difficult to win every home game, but we did it.”
