Midfielder says his mind is “only on the team and ending the season successfully”
Manchester City midfielder Rodri is not engaging in discussions over a new contract with the club still competing in the title race.
The Spain international has a contract until 2027 but has been linked with an exit from the Etihad Stadium this summer. Rodri could yet sign a contract but will not have those talks while City remain locked in a title battle with Arsenal.
“I’m calm,” Rodri said. “Honestly, I’m not thinking too much about my future right now because there is another priority. My focus is on helping my club finish the season with as many trophies as possible. We still have the chance to win the Premier League.”
City’s push for another league title has been complicated after drawing 3-3 aginst Everton last week, giving Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side all the advantage. Now there is little margin for error in the closing weeks of the campaign.
“As I’ve said before, my mind is only on the team and ending the season successfully,” Rodri said. “Right now, I’m not spending much time thinking about what comes next.”
Rodri has been out injured in the last few weeks with a groin problem but made his return for City’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, helping Guardiola’s side secure their eighth triumph in the competition with a narrow 1-0 win. The midfielder admitted that the road back to fitness was mentally challenging.
“Deciding when to come back wasn’t easy because there were always doubts,” Rodri said. “Even before the game, I still had some uncertainty, but in the end it went very well. Those sixty minutes were very important for my body.”
