Freiburg sealed European qualification with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Leipzig, boosting their confidence ahead of their Europa League final clash with Aston Villa.
Freiburg secured European football for next season in emphatic fashion after thrashing Leipzig 4-1 on the final day of the Bundesliga season at the Europa-Park Stadion.
The result guarantees Julian Schuster’s side at least a UEFA Conference League place, while also providing the perfect momentum boost ahead of their upcoming UEFA Europa League final against Aston Villa in Istanbul.

Leipzig nearly stunned the home crowd inside the opening minutes when Yan Diomande burst through on goal following a brilliant run. However, the Ivory Coast international failed to capitalise on the opportunity, prodding his effort straight at goalkeeper Noah Atubolu from close range.
Freiburg gradually settled into the contest and eventually took control midway through the first half. Matthias Ginter’s header crashed against the crossbar before Jan-Niklas Beste reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and hand the hosts a deserved lead. The home side doubled their advantage just two minutes later as Igor Matanović powered a superb header beyond Péter Gulácsi after meeting Johan Manzambi’s excellent delivery from the right flank.

Leipzig briefly responded through Assan Ouédraogo, who rifled a precise low strike into the bottom corner from distance after 33 minutes to cut the deficit and give the visitors hope heading into the break.
Any hopes of a Leipzig comeback quickly disappeared after halftime when Freiburg restored their two-goal cushion almost immediately. Ginter punished some dreadful defending inside the area to calmly finish from close range just two minutes into the second half.
Freiburg completed the dominant performance with 15 minutes remaining when Matanović turned provider again, teeing up Derry Scherhant to fire home from inside the box and wrap up a memorable victory. Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Europa League final against Aston Villa, while Leipzig finish the Bundesliga campaign in third place and prepare for another season of Champions League football.
