Club expect any agreements with the interim coach to be finalised before Sunday’s final home game against Nottingham Forest

Manchester United have made the offer of an initial two-year contract to Michael Carrick to become the club’s permanent head coach.

Discussions are now underway after co-owner Jim Ratcliffe approved the move following recommendations from chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox during an executive committee meeting earlier this week.

The proposed contract includes the option of a further season that would keep Carrick at the club until 2029.

There remains work to be done before any agreement is finalised, but the club expect a resolution to be reached before United’s final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Carrick has impressed club officials since stepping into the role in January, having also previously stabilised the side during his caretaker spell in 2021. United’s hierarchy believe he has earned the opportunity to take charge on a permanent basis after helping steady the club during another difficult period.

His current coaching staff are also expected to remain in place. Assistant coach Steve Holland is viewed internally as a key figure, while Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion are all set to be offered new contracts. Goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson is also expected to continue in his current position after stepping up following Ruben Amorim’s departure.

United considered other managerial options before settling on Carrick, but the unavailability of their top candidates, including Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique, influenced the club’s thinking.
