Aston Villa’s hopes of securing a Premier League top-five finish suffered a setback after a dramatic 2-2 draw against already-relegated Burnley, who extended their winless home run to 14 league matches.
Aston Villa missed the opportunity to strengthen their grip on a top-five Premier League finish after being held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by relegated Burnley at Turf Moor. The result leaves Unai Emery’s side with work still to do in the race for Champions League qualification, while Burnley extended their winless run at home to 14 league games.
Despite Burnley having little left to play for following their confirmed relegation, Villa struggled to impose themselves consistently throughout the contest. The visitors started brightly though, with John McGinn threading an early pass through Burnley’s defence for Morgan Rogers, but the midfielder dragged his effort wide of goal.
Villa were made to pay for that missed opportunity inside the opening 10 minutes. Emiliano Martinez could only parry Lesley Ugochukwu’s low strike into the path of Jaidon Anthony, who reacted quickest to sweep home and hand Burnley a surprise lead against the run of play. The Clarets looked the sharper side during much of the first half and nearly doubled their advantage midway through the period. Loum Tchaouna caused Villa repeated problems down the flank, and his inviting cross found Zian Flemming in space, but the Dutch forward fired wastefully wide.
Villa believed they had found an equaliser when Ollie Watkins headed in Morgan Rogers’ cross, only for VAR to rule the striker marginally offside. However, the visitors finally restored parity moments later as Ross Barkley powered home a header from McGinn’s dangerous corner delivery.
Emery’s side carried more urgency after the restart and eventually turned the game around in unusual fashion. Martinez launched a long ball forward that released Watkins behind the Burnley defence, and the striker raced through before poking the ball past Max Weiss to give Villa the lead.

Burnley responded quickly after some careless defending from Matty Cash gifted possession away in midfield. Hannibal Mejbri produced a clever flick into the path of Flemming, who calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner to level the score once again and silence the travelling supporters. Aston Villa pushed for a winner in the closing stages, and McGinn squandered a golden chance when he headed wide from close range with the goal at his mercy. Both teams created late openings, but neither could find a decisive third goal in an entertaining contest.
The dropped points will feel like a major missed opportunity for Aston Villa, who knew victory would have put them in a commanding position in the battle for a top-five finish. Burnley, meanwhile, showed resilience and spirit despite their relegation, frustrating one of the Premier League’s European hopefuls once again.
