Manchester United are preparing for a major overhaul of their midfield, also known as two midfield signings, and the club have identified West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes as a key target ahead of the summer transfer window.

Interest in Fernandes has increased after an excellent season for West Ham despite their struggles at the bottom end of the league. Discussions have reportedly taken place between representatives of the 21-year-old and the club about a potential bid.

A deal would be easier to do from a United perspective if the London club are relegated. United had the chance to sign Fernandes last summer after Southampton were relegated but opted not to proceed, allowing West Ham to secure him in a £38m deal.

United’s current heavyweight in midfield, Casemiro, is set to leave the club in the summer when his contract expires. Manuel Ugarte is also expected to be pushed toward the exit after two poor seasons.

However, there is some positivity to be found in Kobbie Mainoo, who has been in excellent form and recently signed a long-term contract. United are expected to sign midfielders who will complement his qualities.
