Borussia Dortmund have reportedly joined the race to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo García, as the young Spaniard weighs up his future after a frustrating campaign at the Santiago Bernabéu. Once tipped as one of the academy’s brightest attacking prospects, García is now believed to be increasingly open to leaving in search of regular first-team football, and Germany could provide the escape route he needs.
The 22-year-old had entered the season with genuine optimism after an eye-catching summer in which he finished as top scorer at the FIFA Club World Cup. That form appeared to put him firmly on the radar for a bigger role with Real Madrid, especially under then-manager Xabi Alonso, who had shown a willingness to trust younger talent and gave García encouraging opportunities early on.
But that momentum quickly faded following Alonso’s departure, with the striker seeing his pathway narrow dramatically. In recent weeks he has struggled for meaningful minutes, slipping behind more established names in Madrid’s attacking hierarchy and finding himself increasingly viewed as a peripheral option rather than a genuine rotational solution.
Despite limited opportunities, García has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. While his return of six goals in 34 appearances is modest on paper, scouts continue to value his movement, physical presence and instinctive penalty-box positioning. Bundesliga clubs have monitored him for months, with Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart previously credited with interest before Dortmund emerged as the latest admirers.

According to reports in Germany and Spain, Borussia Dortmund are now seriously assessing whether García could fit into their next attacking rebuild. Dortmund have built a long-standing reputation for reviving or accelerating young careers, and the club believes the Bundesliga’s developmental environment could help the Spaniard unlock the consistency he has so far struggled to show in Madrid.
The issue, however, is price. Dortmund are said to value the striker at around €30 million, a figure that would represent a significant investment but still falls well short of what Real Madrid are demanding.
The Spanish giants reportedly want close to €60 million. roughly in line with García’s internal valuation, before they even entertain formal negotiations, despite the fact that he is not currently central to their plans.
That valuation gap means no immediate deal is close, especially as García only signed a new contract with Real Madrid until 2030 last August. Still, the player’s growing openness to a move and Dortmund’s persistent interest suggest this is a transfer story that could gather momentum as the summer window opens.
