Manchester United 2-1 Brentford: Casemiro 11, Sesko 43; Jensen 87
In the end Manchester United were glad it was over. Brentford surged forward in the closing minutes, seeking the equaliser. Keith Andrews’s men are ninth in the league and pushing for a place in Europe and a draw would have taken them above Chelsea to eighth, one point behind Brighton in sixth and within reach of the Europa League spot.
But the visitors’ run of six draws in a row ended at Old Trafford, United holding firm to secure three points for the ninth time under Michael Carrick and all but seal their place among Europe’s elite next season.
It was anything but easy. In contrast to their lethargic start last time out against Leeds United, Carrick’s side came out of the blocks firing in the first half and took the lead very early on, but they soon faced an onslaught from a Brentford team that created chances but failed to take them.
Kobbie Mainoo was at the heart of United’s early dominance. The midfielder glided through Brentford’s midfield in the opening minutes and set up Amad Diallo, who saw his pathetic right-footed effort from close range blocked on the line by Sepp van den Berg when he just had to score.
The early pressure paid off when Harry Maguire headed the ball back across goal from a Bruno Fernandes corner, allowing Casemiro to rise at the far post and nod in his ninth goal of the season. The Brazilian is absolutely top level at the moment, riding on the wave of the feeling as he plays his last games for the club. He has just four matches left now before calling it time at Old Trafford. His send-off should come in the final home game against Nottingham Forest on 17 May.

Brentford responded strongly after falling behind, enjoying a sustained spell of pressure. Igor Thiago had multiple opportunities to equalise but failed to convert. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was at his best, making a series of important interventions to preserve the lead.
At one point Lammens rushed out to get a crucial touch on Thiago’s effort to divert it wide for a corner. That was before he made two vital saves to prevent Ayden Heaven from scoring an own goal, once when the young defender slid in to try and nick the ball away from Thiago, the other when a cross hit his arm and Lammens had to make a dive to claw it away from the line.
United doubled their advantage just before half-time, against the run of play. Amad slid to prevent a pass going through to Thiago, before Fernandes seized on the loose ball and galloped madly towards the other end. The thematic three on two situation presented itself, Fernandes in the middle, driving forward before picking out Benjamin Sesko to his left.
The striker showed composure to shift the ball onto his right foot, take a touch and then finish decisively for his 10th league goal of the season and Fernandes’ 19th assist. The United captain just needs one now to match Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne’s tallies, and one other to beat them and set the record for the highest number of assists in a Premier League season.

Carrick had to fix the gaping holes in his side’s midfield and defence and he made adjustments after the break, bringing on Noussair Mazraoui for Amad and switching to a 5-3-2. It robbed United of opportunities going forward but at least they remained composed in possession and locked Brentford out.
Chances inevitably presented themselves for the visitors in the closing stages and they again struggled to take full advantage, although credit to United and the experienced Casemiro for managing the game well enough. Thiago went close and Dango Ouattara struck the woodwork before Mathias Jensen found space outside the box and fired in from distance to set up a tense finish.
