The veteran midfielder sustained the injury following a clash of heads with Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli late in the match at San Siro. Despite appearing in visible discomfort, Modric remained on the bench after being substituted and only underwent further medical checks after the final whistle.

Subsequent examinations revealed the extent of the damage, with AC Milan confirming that the 40-year-old requires surgery later on Monday to repair the facial fracture.

The injury raises doubts over whether Modric will feature again for AC Milan during the closing weeks of the Serie A campaign, with the Rossoneri already trailing league leaders Inter Milan by 12 points.

However, there is optimism that the Croatian captain will recover in time for this summer’s World Cup, although he may need to wear a protective mask upon his return to action. The tournament begins on June 11, and Croatia will hope their experienced talisman is ready as they prepare for group-stage clashes against England, Ghana and Panama.
