Lazio beat Atalanta on penalties to reach the Coppa Italia final, with goalkeeper Edoardo Motta saving four spot-kicks in a dramatic shootout.

Lazio secured their place in a record 11th Coppa Italia final after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Atalanta in Bergamo. The result marked Lazio’s first-ever away win against La Dea in this competition and sets up a final showdown with Inter Milan.

The two sides met again seven weeks after a thrilling 2-2 draw in the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico, with Atalanta entering the clash hoping to turn around a disappointing run of form. Despite their struggles, the hosts started brightly and controlled much of the early play.

Chances were few and far between in a tense opening period. Atalanta came closest through Nicola Zalewski, whose effort deflected wide after good work from Charles De Ketelaere, while Lazio’s only real opportunity saw Toma Bašić head over from a Mattia Zaccagni free-kick.

The second half brought controversy as Atalanta thought they had taken the lead through Éderson, only for VAR to rule the goal out. The decision came after it was deemed that Edoardo Motta had control of the ball before the Brazilian’s close-range finish, handing Lazio a significant reprieve.

Lazio began to grow into the game and eventually broke the deadlock when Alessio Romagnoli fired home a superb first-time effort from Zaccagni’s corner. However, their lead lasted just two minutes, as Mario Pašalić responded swiftly with a deflected strike to level the score.

The drama continued into extra time, where Atalanta had another goal ruled out, this time for offside in the build-up to Giacomo Raspadori’s header. With neither side able to find a winner, the contest was decided by a tense penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper Edoardo Motta emerged as Lazio’s hero, delivering a remarkable performance by saving four consecutive penalties. His stops against Nuno Tavares, Gianluca Scamacca, Pašalić, and De Ketelaere proved decisive in sending the visitors through.

Lazio will now aim to lift the Coppa Italia for the eighth time, and their first since the 2018/19 triumph, when they face Inter Milan in the final on May 13.
