Injured Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee picked up an injury that could now see him miss the rest of the season.
Zirkzee limped off the pitch in the second half of Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle at St James’s Park on Sunday.
Head coach Ruben Amorim provided an update after the match saying he was going to “be out for some games”.
The forward has been undergoing tests but people close to the matter say there is a possibility that he will be unable to feature for the club again this season.
This comes as a blow to Manchester United, being already depleted in their forward line. Wingers Marcus Rashford and Antony both went out on loan in January, while Amad Diallo has been out since early February with an injury that was reported as likely to keep him out till the end of the season – although the Ivorian is now back training on grass.
While United are 14th in the Premier league with only six games to go, and unlikely to make it into the top half even if they win all their matches, the Red Devils still have a chance of winning the Europa League, which could secure Champions League football next season.
Zirkzee started the season slowly, but has since become one of United’s better performers this season and will be seriously missed in the squad.
The Netherlands international scored late in the second half of United’s Europa League first-leg quarter-final tie against Lyon, although an error from Andre Onana allowed Lyon to score and keep the tie in the balance.
United play Lyon on Thursday at Old Trafford in the return leg.
