The Three Lions of England are still searching for their first World Cup trophy, and as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, here are three players who can either make or mar their progress.
A team is made up of 11 players, but very often, we see certain players dictate how teams play and determine their chances of succeeding in any competition.
For England and Tuchel in the 2026 World Cup, this phenomenon applies.

Tuchel will obviously need to get his team selection and tactical setup right, but then, we believe that there are four players who will dictate England’s chances at the 2026 World Cup.
Harry Kane
The first and most obvious player is Harry Kane.
As England’s captain and foremost goalscorer, Harry Kane plays a key role in how far England will go in the 2026 World Cup. Looking at his form at club level this season, England will need Harry Kane to fire on all cylinders, as most of their chances in front of goal will fall to him.

Harry Kane currently has 50 goals this season, a new record for the Englishman. He is also one of the top contenders for the Ballon d’Or, and adding the World Cup to his achievements this season could also put him firmly in pole position to lift the award.
Harry Kane is England’s deadliest striker, and he leads the frontline that could comprise of Rogers, Eze, Saka, and Palmer. He was missed in the last international friendlies, and England’s performances in those friendlies show that Harry Kane is an X-factor in this team.
If he can hold his own and score as frequently as he has at club level, England could have a shot at the World Cup trophy.
Reece James
Many would disagree, but Reece James will be key to England’s defence and chances at the 2026 World Cup.
Although currently injured at the moment, he is on track to play at the 2026 World Cup, and Thomas Tuchel is a big fan of the Chelsea captain. For the most part of the 2025/26 season, James has been one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, and he earned a place in Tuchel’s team, even scoring a free-kick on his return.

While James’ fitness might be a fear, England can also rely on Trent Alexander-Arnold. He is working his way back to being at his best, and Tuchel has admitted that leaving him out of England’s squad for the last international friendlies may have been harsh.
James and Trent are two of the best right-backs in the world, and together, they could increase England’s chances at the World Cup.
Cole Palmer
Run from it, dread it, the truth still is that Cole Palmer is England’s best player in the attacking midfield position, and that’s why he is important to their World Cup dreams.

While Eze has been touch-and-go in his performances for Arsenal, he and Foden have not been able to outperform an injured Cole Palmer. Rogers could fit into this position as well, but Tuchel may prefer him on the wing, allowing Cole the option of free-roaming and creating for the attackers in front of him.
Cole Palmer on his day is a magician, and despite an injury-ridden season, he has shown that class is permanent, recording 10 goals and 3 assists in 24 appearances.
Declan Rice
Declan Rice is an engine, and he will be a deciding factor in England’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

Although he has played nearly every game for Arsenal this season, he has been their best midfielder and, by extension, England’s best-performing midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues. He doesn’t shy away from tackles, can support on set-pieces, and serves as a huge physical presence in the midfield.
Paired with Elliot Anderson, who has been in fine form this season, England has a double pivot that could put many coaches on their toes.
