Tottenham captain Cristian Romero is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, dealing a major blow to Spurs’ survival hopes.

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a devastating setback with confirmation that captain Cristian Romero will miss the remainder of the season through injury.

The 27-year-old defender suffered the issue during Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, where he limped off following a collision with goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.

Romero’s emotional reaction as he left the pitch had already raised fears of a serious problem, particularly given Tottenham’s precarious position in the Premier League standings.

Medical assessments have now confirmed a high-grade partial tear of the medial cruciate ligament, an injury expected to sideline him for up to eight weeks. The diagnosis not only ends his club campaign but also casts doubt over his involvement with the Argentina national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

For newly appointed head coach Roberto De Zerbi, Romero’s absence is a major blow, removing a key leader and defensive presence at a critical stage of the season.

With Spurs sitting 18th and fighting to avoid relegation, losing one of their most influential players significantly complicates their survival battle in the final weeks.
