Mikel Arteta calls Arsenal’s loss to Bournemouth a big punch in the face as the Premier League title race tightens ahead of a crucial clash with Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal to respond strongly after their 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, describing the result as a big punch in the face. The loss has cast fresh doubt over the Gunners’ Premier League title push.

Bournemouth took control early through Junior Kroupi, who gave the visitors the lead after 17 minutes. Arsenal struggled to find rhythm before Viktor Gyökeres converted a penalty to bring them level. However, the visitors regained the advantage in the 74th minute when Alex Scott found the net. Arsenal were unable to mount a comeback, slipping to just their second home league defeat of the season.

Despite the setback, Arsenal remain nine points clear of Manchester City, although their rivals have two games in hand. With only six matches remaining, the title race is far from decided. The two sides are set to meet at the Etihad Stadium next weekend in what could prove to be a decisive encounter. Arteta acknowledged the significance of the fixture as momentum begins to shift.

The Arsenal boss admitted his side fell below their usual standards, particularly in key areas of the pitch. However, he avoided singling out individuals, choosing instead to focus on collective improvement.

Recent results have seen Arsenal lose three consecutive domestic matches, a sharp downturn after a season that once promised a historic quadruple. Despite that, they remain in a strong position compared to expectations at the start of the campaign.

Arteta emphasised the need for a mental reset and the return of key players such as Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori. With a UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting looming, followed by the showdown with City, he insists his team must regroup quickly and embrace the challenge ahead.
