CONMEBOL publicly supports Gianni Infantino should he run for a fourth term leading FIFA.

CONMEBOL has voiced its support for Gianni Infantino should he decide to run for a fourth term as head of FIFA. The South American governing body made its stance clear in a statement released following a council meeting.

Although Infantino has not yet confirmed whether he will contest the 2027–2031 term, CONMEBOL said it had unanimously agreed to back his leadership. The declaration makes the confederation the first to publicly support a potential re-election bid. CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez praised Infantino for his commitment to South American football. He highlighted the FIFA chief’s engagement with the region and his broader vision for developing the game globally.

Infantino first assumed the FIFA presidency in 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter. He was re-elected unopposed in both 2019 and 2023, strengthening his position within global football governance.

During his tenure, Infantino has pushed for the expansion of major FIFA competitions. The upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico will be the first to feature 48 teams. He also oversaw the expansion of the women’s World Cup, with the 2023 tournament increasing to 32 teams. The changes were presented as part of efforts to grow participation and global representation in football.

However, Infantino’s tenure has not been without criticism. Concerns have been raised in some quarters regarding governance issues and the increasing congestion of the international calendar.

Despite those debates, CONMEBOL’s endorsement signals strong support from one of football’s most influential regions, potentially giving Infantino early momentum if he chooses to seek another term.
