In a game where few chances fell to both sides, Arsenal managed to grab a late winner and the advantage going into the second leg.
Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon faced off for the first time since 2024, and once again, Arsenal had the upper hand as they won 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Kai Havertz.
Arsenal were almost behind early in the game as a line-breaking pass from Diamonde set Araujo through on goal. The defender lashed his shot at goal but a fingertip from Raya pushed it onto the bar to keep Arsenal from going behind.
The Gunners came closest in the first half when Madueke hit the bar directly from a corner.
In the second half, both sides had patches where they dominated the game, but Sporting looked the most dangerous on many occasions. Raya was called into action on three occasions, and he stopped Sporting Lisbon from going ahead in front of their home crowd.
Arsenal did take the lead in the second half as Zubimendi scored from outside the box but it was ruled out for offside as the reverse pass that led to the goal came from an offside position.
Sporting looked like they would hold on for the draw as the fourth official raised the board signifying two minutes added time, but that was when tragedy struck. Arsenal mustered one last action and a sublime pass set Havertz free, and all the German had to do was control the ball and slot it past the onrushing Rui Silva to put Arsenal ahead.

That goal in the dying moments was enough, as it was too late for Sporting to do anything. Arsenal now take a goal advantage into the second leg, which takes place next week. They also remain unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League and are the first team in the UCL this season to beat Sporting Lisbon at home.
