Former midfielder says the club must make sweeping changes in the summer despite improved form
Paul Scholes has sparked debate after calling for major changes at Manchester United, including the potential sale of Noussair Mazraoui.
The former United midfielder said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast that the club should undergo a “footballing bloodbath” in the summer window, despite the team’s improved form under interim coach Michael Carrick.
United are currently third in the Premier League and on course to return to the Champions League, but Scholes questioned whether several players are suited to the club’s long-term ambitions.
Mazraoui was among those singled out, with Scholes expressing doubts about his role in the team.
“I don’t know exactly where his position is,” said Scholes. “He has been used as a right-sided centre-back at times. I don’t think he fits the team’s current system, and perhaps it is time for him to leave to make way for more specialised options.
Alongside Mazraoui, he also named Lenny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee as players who could be moved on.
His criticism also extended to Casemiro, whose departure has been announced, and Harry Maguire, who has just signed a new contract with reduced wages.
