Manuel Locatelli admits Italy failed following play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Manuel Locatelli has expressed deep disappointment following Italy’s heartbreaking elimination from the FIFA World Cup. The midfielder shared an emotional message on social media, acknowledging collective responsibility while pledging to continue giving everything for his country.

The Juventus captain’s comments came in the aftermath of Italy’s penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica, a result that confirmed the Azzurri would miss a third consecutive World Cup. The loss has triggered widespread disappointment across Italian football.

Locatelli’s statement followed emotional reactions from teammates, including Leonardo Spinazzola and Gianluigi Donnarumma, who both spoke publicly after the defeat. Their messages reflected a squad still coming to terms with another painful setback.

Italy had entered the match with optimism after beating Northern Ireland 2-0, but the contest turned dramatically following a first-half red card for Alessandro Bastoni. Reduced to ten men, Italy were forced onto the defensive for much of the game.

The match ended 1-1 after regulation time, and neither side could find a winner in extra time. The tie was ultimately decided by penalties, where Bosnia prevailed, leaving Italy facing another World Cup absence.

In his message, Locatelli admitted the emotional toll of the defeat, describing himself as devastated and drained. He highlighted the responsibility felt by the players toward supporters, including families and young fans who had hoped to see Italy on the world stage.

The midfielder acknowledged the harsh reality of the situation, stating that the team had failed to achieve its objective. He emphasised that the players, coaching staff and management had been united in pursuit of qualification but ultimately fell short.

Despite the disappointment, Locatelli ended on a determined note. He vowed to keep fighting for Italy and urged supporters to stand together, insisting he would continue giving everything whenever he steps onto the pitch.
