Goalkeeper’s wages set to increase as club near Champions League qualification
Manchester United will have a decision to make in the summer regarding goalkeeper Andre Onana.
The 29-year-old is currently on loan at Trabzonspor, having joined the Turkish side on a season-long deal in September. The agreement does not include an option or obligation to buy, meaning Onana is due back at Old Trafford at the end of the campaign.
Part of the arrangement that enabled the move was a significant reduction in Onana’s wages following United’s failure to qualify for European competition for the 2025-26 season. However, with Michael Carrick’s side currently sitting third in the Premier League and on course for a return to the Champions League, Onana’s salary is set to revert to its original level.
The increase is concerning because it could make it harder for United to attract interest in the goalkeeper during the transfer window. The club may be forced to subsidise part of his wages if they are to secure either a permanent transfer or another loan deal.
Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan under former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023, still has two years remaining on his contract. People close to the player say he intends to return for pre-season and compete for a place in the squad. Discussions between his representatives and the club are expected before the end of May.
United’s goalkeeping situation has evolved in his absence. The club are pleased with the performances of Senne Lammens, who is expected to continue as first choice next season.
There could also be changes in the backup positions. Altay Bayindir attracted interest from Besiktas in January and has made it clear he wants regular football to improve his chances of representing Turkey at the World Cup. While United blocked a mid-season move, further interest is anticipated this summer.
Meanwhile, third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton is out of contract in the summer after signing a one-year extension last year.
