Julian Nagelsmann says Barcelona goalkeeper’s chances “very, very slim”

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is facing an uphill battle to be included in Germany’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, with head coach Julian Nagelsmann casting doubt over his chances.

The Barcelona goalkeeper has struggled for playing time over the past two years and Nagelsmann suggested he was unlikely to be selected as a result.

“Out of respect for him, I’m not ruling it out entirely, but the chances are still very, very, very slim because you have to look at his overall situation,” said Germany’s coach. “He’s been out for a year now and has played very little.”

Nagelsmann confirmed he had recently spoken with the 33-year-old and praised his attitude despite his struggles with fitness.

“We spoke briefly the day before yesterday,” said Nagelsmann ahead of Germany’s friendly against Ghana. “I like the fact that he’s always there when he can make a contribution; he always offers to do so. He doesn’t just look after himself, but also the team.”

Ter Stegen is currently on loan at Girona from Barcelona but has endured yet another injury-disrupted season. He has been sidelined since late January with a thigh issue and has missed seven matches for the club he joined on loan.

His last appearance for Germany came in June 2025 against France in the Nations League, taking his international tally to 44 caps.

Nagelsmann added that the goalkeeper must continue his recovery before any decision can be reconsidered.

“He needs to step up his rehab,” said Nagelsmann. “He’s doing quite well and isn’t in much pain anymore, just a little bit, but it takes time. He’s not 21 anymore and has a few matches under his belt; we just have to see how he’s getting on.”
