West Ham midfielder has been linked as a potential target to replace the Egyptian
Is the unsung Jarrod Bowen the right player to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool? Steven Gerrard, for one, doesn’t think so.
With Salah set to leave after nine years at Anfield, Liverpool will need to reshape their attack even more than they did last summer. Potential targets to replace the Egyptian include RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, Juventus’s Francisco Conceicao and Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise.
Bowen, who has impressed for years at West Ham, has been linked as a possible option, but Gerrard is not convinced he meets the required level.
“I really like Bowen and think he is a top player but I am not sure he is Salah’s level to replace him,” Gerrard said. “Liverpool will probably look for more one-vs-one merchants who can go on the outside. At times this season, certainly when they had that spell when they were quite inconsistent, they were too predictable on the sides.
“And the way this manager [Arne Slot] wants to play is work it side to side to set the one-v-ones up. They have missed [Luis] Diaz a lot. I would say we need to address the sides of the pitch.”
Former defender Jamie Carragher also feels Bowen is not suitable, although for him it is more a question of targeting younger players.
“He was maybe on Liverpool’s radar under Jurgen Klopp early on, but obviously Mo Salah was already there,” Carragher said. “But no, he’d be too old for Liverpool.”
