Ballon d’Or winner can’t rule out move to “the best clubs in the world”

Rodri has refused to rule out the possibility of leaving Manchester City to join Real Madrid.

The Ballon d’Or winner is back playing regularly for City after recovering from a serious knee injury suffered in 2024. He has just over a year remaining on his contract and has admitted his future is not yet settled.

“No, no,” Rodri said when asked if a move to Madrid was off limits. “There have been a lot of players who have taken that path. Above all, when they’ve not done it directly, but over time. For me, you can’t rule out the best clubs in the world.”

Rodri came through Atletico’s academy and returned to the club for the 2018-19 season before joining City a year later. Since moving to the Premier League, he has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the game, winning the Ballon d’Or and guiding City to a treble-winning campaign in 2023. He also won Euro 2024 with Spain.

“I’ve got a year left on my contract [at City] and at some point we’ll have to sit down and talk,” Rodri said. “I’d like to return [to La Liga], obviously.”
