Club aggrieved about decision to deny them a penalty but award Bournemouth another under similar circumstances
Manchester United are set to lodge a formal complaint to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after they were denied a penalty against Bournemouth.
United believed they should have been awarded a second penalty when Amad went down under pressure from Adrien Truffert, only for referee Stuart Attwell to wave play on. Within moments, Bournemouth broke forward and equalised when the penalty could have given United a two-goal cushion instead.
The decision, reviewed by VAR official Craig Pawson, was judged not to meet the threshold for a foul. United would have been willing to accept that decision, had Bournemouth not later been awarded a penalty minutes later for what they feel was a similar foul.
Harry Maguire was adjudged to have fouled Evanilson and was sent off, Eli Junior Kroupi scoring from the spot to bring the game to 2-2.
“A big opportunity to go 2-0 up and we get one penalty and not the other,” Michael Carrick said afterwards. “It’s the same thing, really, a two-handed grab.
“I think they’re both penalties and it’s a massive moment in the game. It ended up chaos after that. Massive moment and I don’t understand how you can give one and not the other, it’s crazy.
“It’s as obvious as you can get. You’ve already given one, so to not give the other one… it’s clear, if that’s what he believes is a penalty to start with, then the second one has to be. I don’t understand how you can’t give that.”
