Pundit says the manager’s task has become “really difficult” after the Anfield crowd booed at the team

Jamie Carragher has warned that Arne Slot faces an uphill battle to reconnect with the Liverpool support after fans booed at the team and expressed their displeasure in their draw against Tottenham at the weekend.

Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Spurs on Sunday did little to alleviate fears that the defending champions could miss out on Champions League qualification this season. The Reds are fifth in the league, two points behind Aston Villa in third and one ahead of Chelsea in fourth.

A late equaliser from Richarlison cancelled out Dominik Szoboszlai’s earlier free kick and Liverpool dropped two points in a game against the 16th-placed side in the league that they really should have won. Sections of the Anfield crowd began leaving before full time, while those who stayed made their displeasure known at the final whistle.

“It’s worrying, in terms of what Liverpool do this season,” Carragher said. “The bigger point is how worrying it is for the manager. I think there’s a difference with most support in terms of what we see online compared to the match-going fans.

“It’s not easy for a Liverpool crowd to turn on a manager who has won a title less than a year before, but I felt there was a big shift on Sunday in terms of how the crowd felt about the team and the manager. The booing at the end, that was proper booing from a disgruntled and unhappy fanbase.

“I think it’s going to be really difficult now for Arne Slot to get them back. Once you lose that crowd, it’s really difficult to get them back.”
