The defeat came at a crucial moment for AC Milan, who had the opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Inter Milan after their rivals were held to a draw by Atalanta BC earlier in the weekend.
However, Lazio made the brighter start and quickly put Milan under pressure. Early chances from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Nuno Tavares forced goalkeeper Mike Maignan into action, while Kenneth Taylor struck the crossbar with a powerful effort.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 26th minute when Gustav Isaksen capitalised on a long pass from Adam Marušić, shrugging off Pervis Estupiñán before firing a precise finish past Maignan.
AC Milan struggled to find their rhythm for much of the contest, although Christian Pulisic came close after the break when his shot was pushed away by Lazio goalkeeper Edoardo Motta. Frustration also surfaced on the Milan bench when Rafael Leão reacted angrily after being substituted by manager Massimiliano Allegri during the second half.
Despite late pressure and an effort from Zachary Athekame being ruled out for handball, Milan were unable to find an equaliser. The defeat leaves the Rossoneri eight points behind Inter, while Lazio, coached by Maurizio Sarri, climbed to ninth place after securing consecutive league victories.
