Midfielder says recovery from the knee injury has “been really tough”

Barcelona midfielder Gavi returned to the side against Sevila in his first appearance since sustaining a serious knee injury in August.

After undergoing surgery on his right knee in September, Gavi spent months working through rehabilitation. He made his comeback 205 days later, late in the second half against Sevilla when he was introduced in the 82nd minute.

There was a standing ovation for the 21-year-old and he took the armband from Ronald Araujo.

“It’s been really tough, much harder than the previous injury,” Gavi said after the game. “The sensation today back at Camp Nou is unique. I am so happy.”

His return also provides a timely boost for Barcelona as they approach the critical stage of the season. Barcelona are four points clear at the top after smashing Sevilla 5-2 and will need to maintain their position for 10 more games. The Catalans also have the second leg of the Champions League last-16 match against Newcastle and will be hoping to progress further in the competition than last season’s semi-final exit.

Coach Hansi Flick was thrilled to welcome back Gavi although he has made it clear the winger will be eased in as cautiously as possible.

“It’s a good step for him, in the right direction,” Flick said of Gavi. “Everyone in Barca is happy he’s back.”
