Torres enjoyed a prolific start to the season but has now gone eight games without scoring

Barcelona will look elsewhere in the summer for a player to lead their attack following Ferran Torres’ unconvincing performances in the second half of the season.

The striker again failed to find the net during Barcelona’s narrow 1-0 victory over Athletic Club on Saturday, making it eight games since he last scored for the club.

Manager Hansi Flick said after the match that the player was going through a spell where he “lacked confidence” and suffered “bad luck” but added that he and the coaching staff were working with him to help him rediscover his form.

“He lacks confidence right now, but we are working on it,” Flick said. “It’s important to try everything in matches. He’s in a good dynamic, he’s fast, and right now he’s just having a bit of bad luck, but if I can help him, I will.”

Torres enjoyed a prolific start to the season and even forced his way ahead of Robert Lewandowski in the starting lineup. The noise coming from the recruitment department was that the club would be willing to let Lewandowski go in the summer and potentially not sign a replacement given Torres’ form.

His overall goal tally still stands at 19 across all competitions which shows how influential he was during the first half of the campaign.

However, given concerns over his form Barcelona are now likely to turn to the transfer market in the summer after Lewandowski’s eventual departure.

One target has been Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, although the Madrid club have warned that the player is not available and will not be sold.
