Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has defended his decision to heavily rotate his squad after the Blues edged past Wrexham to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Premier League side required extra-time goals to overcome a stubborn opponent in a hard-fought encounter.

Rosenior made nine changes to the lineup that defeated Aston Villa 4-1 in their previous match. Despite the fresh lineup, Chelsea eventually secured victory through late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Joao Pedro after Wrexham were reduced to 10 men following George Dobson’s red card near the end of normal time.

The Chelsea manager has frequently rotated his squad this season, averaging five changes per match. He has also avoided fielding the same back four in consecutive games and recently began rotating goalkeepers between Rob Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.

When asked whether such extensive changes could disrupt the team’s rhythm, Rosenior acknowledged the risk but stood by his approach. He insisted that managing player workload and keeping the entire squad match-ready is essential during a demanding schedule.

Several key players, including Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, were given the night off and left out of the squad entirely. Meanwhile, Reece James remained on the bench as an unused substitute, while Marc Cucurella and Joao Pedro were introduced later in the match.

Rosenior also highlighted the importance of gradually reintegrating players returning from injury. Romeo Lavia, who started his first match in over four months after previously suffering an early injury in a Champions League game against Qarabag, was one of those needing valuable minutes.

Looking ahead, Chelsea face a major challenge as they prepare for a Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Rosenior believes his rotation strategy will ensure the squad remains sharp and ready for the demanding run of fixtures ahead.
