Newcastle manager praises his ten men for “deserved” win
Eddie Howe believes the decision to award Jacob Ramsey a second yellow for simulation in Newcastle’s Premier League game against Manchester United was “really harsh” and should not have happened.
The Magpies were forced to play with ten men for the entirety of the second half but managed to inflict a first league defeat in charge at United on Michael Carrick, after William Osula’s late stunner ensured a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park.
“An amazing night,” said Howe. “It was a great performance all the way through. Eleven v eleven or ten v eleven, I thought we deserved to win.
“The main emotion was trying to work out how we’d play in that second half. We wanted to regroup. I thought Jacob Ramsey’s sending off was really harsh. I don’t think he’s looking for a penalty there.”
Newcastle’s boss also praised Osula for an inspired late strike to claim the win.
“He’s delivered an amazing moment for the supporters here. It’s a great moment for him and he deserves it,” said Howe. “Hopefully it’s a turning point for him.”
Osula said: “That was the best feeling ever. I was so happy for that. When I came on I just prayed that I was going to score and make something happen and thank God that that happened.
“I was practising that in training yesterday, just cut in and finish it, so the hard work paid off.”
Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made excellent saves to keep United out, including one to keep out Leny Yoro in the second half. This was only his seventh league start for Newcastle this season having been fighting for minutes with Nick Pope.
“I’ve had opportunities which it’s been tough to get this year and hopefully today I’ve helped with this match to get three points,” said Ramsdale. “It’s about kicking on, and we wanted to be resilient and with 10 men we may as well have had 13 men with the crowd. It’s been an excellent night for us.”
