Manager rues poor performance and lack of intensity

Alvaro Arbeloa confessed his side must “do better” after a poor outing against Osasuna on Saturday that ended in defeat.

Madrid were second best in the first half and Osasuna went ahead via a controversial penalty, after Thibaut Courtiois was adjudged by VAR to have fouled Ante Budimir.

Vinicius Junior equalised with 17 minutes to go and Madrid felt they could win it, but it was Osasuna who grabbed a crushing late goal.

“I don’t think it was a good game from our side,” said Arbeloa. “Osasuna played their game, and they scored two goals from their two shots on target. We can do better, and we have a much higher level.

“We need to play much better, with more intensity. We know it’s not easy to do it on a Wednesday and a Sunday, but that’s what’s expected of us; this is Real Madrid.

“We know that all away games are very difficult. I was very aware of how difficult it was to come to this stadium.”

Regarding the penalty, Madrid’s coach said: “From what little I saw, I think there might even have been a foul before that play. There were two very close offside calls, and we were unlucky that both went against us.”
