Manager lauds the 20-year-old’s incredible step up
Pep Guardiola was excited by the performance of Manchester City midfielder Nico O’Reilly, who scored twice on Saturday to help his side secure a crucial league win over Newcastle.
City went into the tie needing victory over the Toon to close the distance between them and Arsenal to just two points. O’Reilly scored and then repeated the trick after Lewis Hall had pulled Newcastle back just eight minutes after.
The 20-year-old has been utilised in various positions, particularly at left-back, but against Newcastle he started in his natural position of central midfield.
“He’s played full back, played holding midfielder when Rodri was not there, now he’s in his position,” Guardiola said.
“I know the pace he has. What a player. He has made an incredible step up and he has had a lot of minutes. But he deserves it, he deserves the minutes he has played.”

The academy graduate acknowledged that it was a tough game against Eddie Howe’s side, who pushed late but could not find an equaliser.
“We came into the game needing the three points and it closes the gap now so we’re buzzing with the win,” O’Reilly said. “They pushed us to the very end.
“They were throwing balls into the box throughout the second half. Everyone of us gave 120% effort and that’s what we’ll need every game.”
City defender Marc Guehi started another game at the heart of defence. The England international said: “These games are always difficult – always tough to play in. Newcastle show intensity, endeavour and quality – it’s a really good win. Maybe not a statement win but one which puts us in a good position.”
