Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has been handed a four-match suspension after his red card against Manchester United, ruling him out of several key fixtures.

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has been hit with a four-game suspension following his dismissal in Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. The ban was confirmed after his studs-up challenge on Casemiro was deemed serious foul play by the Premier League Match Centre.

Romero was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle that officials said was made with excessive force and endangered an opponent. Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank offered no complaints about the decision, admitting simply that the challenge merited a sending-off.

The suspension adds to an unenviable disciplinary record for the Argentine defender. Since joining Tottenham in 2021, Romero has now received four Premier League red cards, more than any other player in that period, and has been sent off six times in all competitions for the club.

This latest dismissal came at a sensitive time for both player and club. Earlier in the week, Romero had publicly criticised Tottenham’s hierarchy over their perceived lack of investment in the squad, increasing the scrutiny surrounding his actions on the pitch.

Having already been sent off earlier this season against Liverpool in December, Romero’s ban means he will miss Tottenham’s next four Premier League matches. His absence represents a significant setback for Frank, who is under growing pressure as Tottenham hover dangerously close to a relegation battle.

Romero will first sit out Tuesday’s home clash against Newcastle, before also missing the north London derby against Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He will then be unavailable for away trips to Fulham and a home fixture against Crystal Palace in early March.

The centre-back will not be eligible to return until Tottenham travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on March 15, leaving Frank to navigate a crucial run of games without one of his most influential and combative players at the heart of defence.
