Inter Milan secured a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, but missed out on a spot in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Inter Milan will now join Dortmund in the play-off round, with the German side also failing to progress straight to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Both teams needed a win to boost their chances of progressing, but the first half was cautious, with neither side taking many risks. Dortmund had the better chances, with Serhou Guirassy squandering a gilt-edged opportunity early on.

Inter couldn’t quite match Dortmund’s chances, but still had opportunities to take the lead. Federico Dimarco’s powerful volley and Yann Bisseck’s hooked effort tested Gregor Kobel, but the Dortmund goalkeeper held firm.

The tempo increased after the break, with Inter turning up the heat and creating chances through Francesco Pio Esposito. But it was Dimarco who broke the deadlock, beautifully curling a free-kick into the net.

Dortmund failed to respond, and Inter sealed the win with a deflected finish from Andy Diouf in stoppage time. However, late winners for Chelsea and Sporting meant Inter missed out on a top-eight spot, dropping to 10th place on goal difference.

The result means Inter who finished in 10th place will face a play-off opponent to secure their place in the round of 16, while Dortmund who finished the night in 17th will also face the same fate.
