New deal is expected to ward off interest from other clubs next summer

Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez is set to sign a new two-year extension to his contract. The deal will keep him at the club until 2031.

Lopez previously signed a contract in 2024, at the time extending his stay until 2029. His performances so far this season have convinced the club to tie him down further at the club.

The attacking midfielder has been one of Barcelona’s best players this season, regularly scoring decisive goals to keep them going competing on all fronts.

The 22-year-old has produced 10 goals and 10 assists so far, his most recent contribution being the opener against Real Oviedo at Camp Nou at the weekend.

He has mostly made the attacking midfield position his own and when he is fit he has often been selected. He has started 16 of the 25 games he has featured in so far this season, left on the bench only nine times.

In comparison, last season he featured in 46 games throughout the season but started only 19. In that campaign he also managed just eight goals and 10 assists, meaning that by January this season he has already exceeded his goal contributions from last term.

The new deal is also expected to ward off interest in the player from other clubs, particularly the Premier League. Last summer the player was linked with Chelsea and he could have been even more attractive next summer.

Lopez came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy and made his first appearance for the first team in 2023 under Xavi.
