Tottenham Hotspur have entered discussions with Liverpool to sign left-back Andy Robertson.

Robertson has only five months left on his deal but talks over an extension have not progressed. He has struggled for game time this season after Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez and Arne Slot showed a preference for the Hungarian. The 31-year-old said last week that he was “a player who wants to play”.

“I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that’s not happening,” Robertson said, fuelling talk of an exit.

The Scotland captain has equally drawn interest from Atletico Madrid, who also tried to sign him last summer, but it is understood Tottenham are the more serious of the two parties.

There is a desire among all sides to get the deal done, according to Sky Sports, with Tottenham boss Thomas Frank in desperate need of additions to save his job.

Tottenham have Destiny Udogie, Djed Spence and the 19-year-old Souza as options at left-back, so it is not clear whether one of those is on the way out. However, Spurs are understood to be attracted to Robertson due to his experience in the Premier League and status as a proven winner.
