Sporting CP stunned Champions League holders PSG with a dramatic 2-1 win, thanks to a late brace from Luis Suarez.
The match, played at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, saw PSG dominate possession and create chances, but it was Sporting who struck first in the 74th minute.
Geny Catamo’s deflected effort fell to Suarez, who coolly slotted the ball past Lucas Chevalier. PSG equalized five minutes later through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s superb strike, but Suarez struck again in the 90th minute, heading in the rebound from Francisco Trincao’s saved shot.
The victory extends Sporting’s impressive home record against French opposition to eight wins in 10 matches. PSG, on the other hand, suffered their first Champions League loss against a team playing outside the top five European leagues since December 2013.
PSG had started the match strongly, with Vitinha and Nuno Mendes forcing Rui Silva into early saves. However, the visitors’ profligacy in front of goal ultimately proved costly, as they failed to capitalize on their dominance.
The first half saw several chances for both teams, including a disallowed goal for PSG due to a foul by Senny Mayulu. The teams went into halftime level at 0-0, despite PSG’s 69% possession.
In the second half, Sporting created more chances, and Suarez’s goal gave them the lead. Kvaratskhelia’s equalizer seemed to have set up a thrilling finish, but Suarez had one more trick up his sleeve.
The win moves Sporting up to sixth in the UCL table, while PSG’s hopes of direct qualification for the last 16 have been dented.
