Chelsea are edging closer to signing Rennes centre-back Jérémy Jacquet, with reports suggesting the Blues have agreed personal terms with the 20-year-old French defender.

Jacquet, who has been impressing with Rennes, was initially one of three potential targets for Chelsea, but has now become the frontrunner for the position. The player is keen on the move, and Chelsea have reportedly prepared a contract for him.

The main issue now is the transfer fee, with Rennes demanding around €65 million (£56.4 million, $75.5 million) for Jacquet, which would make him the most expensive sale in the club’s history. Chelsea’s bid is expected to fall below this threshold, but no figure has been officially attached.

Jacquet’s strengths include his aerial dominance and positional intelligence, making him an attractive prospect for Chelsea. However, his disciplinary record is a concern, having served two Ligue 1 suspensions this season.

Other centre-back options Chelsea are considering include Marcos Senesi, Jacobo Ramón, and Castello Lukeba, but Jacquet remains the top target. Liam Rosenior’s appointment has seemingly given Chelsea the green light to pursue new defensive talent.
