Goalkeeper has played only one game for Barcelona this season, against Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey
Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen could be joining Girona on loan this window until the end of the season.
The German has struggled for game time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and coach Hansi Flick has made it clear that Joan Garcia is the first choice for the foreseeable future. Ter Stegen needs regular football if he is to play as Germany’s No 1 at the summer’s global showdown in the Americas.
Ter Stegen has played only one game for Barcelona this season, against Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey last month, but then he was on the bench as the Catalans faced Racing Santander in the round-of-16 match of the competition on Thursday.
Ter Stegen was also linked to a move last summer but the player decided to stay at Barcelona, although a knee injury may have in fact scuppered any chances of a transfer. It is thought that the decision to leave him on the bench this week against a second division side in a domestic cup competition was a key factor in persuading the German to seek options elsewhere.
Girona are still in discussions with Barcelona about the terms of a deal, which could be complicated given Ter Stegen’s considerable wages, but it is understood the player is keen on the move.
