Inter Milan came out on top in a thrilling first-leg Champions League quarter-final contest against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring in the 38th minute, curling the ball into the top corner first time with the outside of his boot, after Marcus Thuram’s intelligent back heel.

It was Inter’s first strike on target. Bayern had been by far the dominant team, controlling possession and creating clear-cut chances despite missing a number of first team players due to injury. However, the attempts of the German heavyweights failed to produce a breakthrough.

Bayern finally found an equaliser when second-half substitute Thomas Muller, who revealed last week that his time at the club was coming to an end, finished off a cross from Konrad Laimer at the back post five minutes from time.

However, Inter would have the final say on the night. Davide Frattesi’s 88th-minute strike put the away side ahead again, ensuring that Muller’s late equaliser lasted only three minutes.

Both sides will meet again at the San Siro in Milan next week Wednesday.
