44-year-old will face Pep Guardiola in the Manchester derby for his first game in charge
Manchester United expect to confirm Michael Carrick as interim manager over the next 24 hours, after concluding their internal process.
Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were the main contenders for a role at the helm until the end of the season, when United look to appoint a permanent head coach.
It emerged on Monday that Carrick was the leading contender, although there was some internal conflict between director of football Jason Wilcox and other high-ranking figures at the club over whether to appoint the 44-year-old or Solskjaer, with Wilcox said to favour Carrick.
It is understood Carrick will offer Darren Fletcher, who took charge of the club for two games against Burnley and Brighton after Ruben Amorim was sacked, a role in his coaching team. Jonathan Woodgate, who worked with Carrick at Middlesbrough from 2022 to 2025, is also expected to have an assistant role.
If confirmed as interim coach, Carrick will be thrust straight into the spotlight with his first being the Manchester derby on Saturday.
The former United midfielder coached the club for three games in November and December 2021 after Solskjaer was sacked. He won two, against Villarreal and Arsenal, and drew one against Chelsea.
