Castilla coach Alvaro Arbeloa to take charge in the interim

Xabi Alonso has left Real Madrid “by mutual consent” after only seven months in charge. He has been replaced by Castilla coach Arbeloa until a new permanent manager can be hired.

Alonso’s departure comes only a day after Madrid lost the Spanish Super Cup final 3-2 to Barcelona in Jedda. However, the writing had been on the wall since November, when the team began to struggle for results under the Spaniard.

Madrid managed just two wins in eight games, losing ground from five points ahead in La Liga to four points behind Barcelona. Madrid also lost the important Champions League games against Liverpool and Manchester City. Results have since improved but the management, led by president Florentino Perez, has decided to make a change.

“Real Madrid C.F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his tenure as first-team coach,” the club said in a statement.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always embodied the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.

“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire coaching staff for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”
