Portuguese full-back is expected to undergo a medical this week and the club may announce the deal as early as Friday

Barcelona sporting director Deco has revealed the club are finalising a January loan deal for Al-Hilal’s Joao Cancelo.

The club are in need of reinforcements at the back, with Hansi Flick having pointed out they need another quality option in defence. Cancelo played for Barcelona on loan in the 2023-24 season, making 42 appearances before moving to Saudi Arabia.

Asked whether the deal is set to be completed, Deco said: “Hopefully so, we’re finalising the process. He hasn’t done his medical tests yet, but he’ll be flying to Barcelona soon. We’re going to close the deal.”

Cancelo is expected to undergo a medical this week and the club may announce the deal as early as Friday.

Barcelona have been thin at the back and Cancelo’s arrival at right back could allow Jules Kounde to switch to centre-back.

The Frenchman has previously said it is his best position, and Barcelona have largely played Pau Cubarsi and converted left-back Gerard Martin in central areas, with Andreas Christensen out for a long spell, Eric Garcia frequently asked to play in midfield, and Ronald Araujo having only returned after being given some time off for his mental health.
