Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane has praised Reece James’ leadership after Enzo Maresca’s dismissal, as the Blues prepare for a crucial clash with Manchester City.

Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane has spoken publicly for the first time since Enzo Maresca’s dismissal, as the Blues prepare for a daunting Premier League test against Manchester City.

McFarlane, who previously worked within Manchester City’s academy setup, has been handed temporary charge of the first team following Maresca’s sacking earlier this week and will lead Chelsea this weekend.

The 40-year-old will be taking charge of his first-ever senior professional match, inheriting a squad low on confidence after winning just one of their last seven Premier League fixtures. Despite the upheaval, McFarlane revealed he was impressed by the players’ response in training, describing the atmosphere as positive and focused as the squad looks to move forward together.

He reserved special praise for Reece James, highlighting the Chelsea captain’s influence during a difficult period and crediting him for stepping up as a leader within the group. “Reece has been brilliant,” McFarlane said. “He’s been a real leader in the group and helped the staff and players get ready for Sunday. The energy and enthusiasm today were exceptional.”

McFarlane also stressed that the club’s culture remains strong despite recent changes, insisting that unity, hunger, and focus will be key as Chelsea aim to reset their season under interim guidance.
