Ivory Coast 1-1 Cameroon: Group F fixture saw United teammates Amad and Mbeumo face off against each other
Manchester United’s Amad Diallo scored his second goal of the Africa Cup of Nations as defending champions Ivory Coast were held to a 1-1 draw by Cameroon.
Amad scored his side’s only goal in the 1-0 win over Mozambique in Ivory Coast’s opening game of Group F, before putting them ahead again against Cameroon.
In the 51st minute, Amad found space on the edge of the box and curled a sweet strike into the far post. But it took Cameroon only five minutes to respond. Junior Tchamadeu’s effort took a heavy deflection off Ghislain Konan and looped beyond Yahia Fofana, who had strayed too far off his line. The goal was credited as an own goal.
The match in Marrakech swung back and forth at high intensity. Amad’s United teammate Bryan Mbeumo was in action on the opposing side, playing on the right wing for Cameroon. Early in the first half he carved open the Ivory coast defence with an inch-perfect pass for Junior Tchamadeu, but Christian Kofane’s effort from the edge of the six-yard box could only hit the crossbar.
A draw seemed a fair result but Mbeumo had the chance to win it late on, striking with virtually the last kick of the game, only for Odilon Kossounou to hurl himself into the path of the shot and block it from close range.
