Julian Brandt now holds the upper hand in contract talks with Borussia Dortmund.

Julian Brandt, the 29-year-old German midfielder, has gained the upper hand in contract talks with Borussia Dortmund. After a strong first half of the season, Brandt is now calling the shots, seeking clarity on his long-term role in the team and the club’s squad planning.

Initially, Brandt was willing to accept a salary decrease to extend his contract beyond 2026. However, his impressive performances have shifted the balance of power in his favor. Dortmund is now more open to a contract extension, but Brandt is taking his time to decide.

Brandt wants assurances about his future at the club, and an offer has already been presented to him with a lower salary than he currently earns. It’s unclear whether he’ll accept it or push for better terms.

Aston Villa is monitoring Brandt’s situation, eyeing a potential bargain move. With his contract expiring in summer 2026, Villa could secure him on a free transfer or negotiate a reduced fee in January 2026.

Other clubs, including Newcastle United and Tottenham, are also interested in Brandt.

Dortmund’s sporting director, Lars Ricken, hints that a contract renewal is possible, but much depends on Brandt’s performances. The club risks losing him for free in summer 2026 if no deal is reached.
