Goalkeeper says time in Turkey has been “truly incredible”
Andre Onana is “very happy” and feels “incredible” in Turkey after what has been a so far successful loan move from Manchester United to Trabzonspor.
Onana’s faced intense criticism at United after error-strewn performances across two full-seasons at the club. He was initially replaced by Altay Bayindir this term before the club acted in the summer to bring in Senne Lammens.
It became clear the Cameroon international needed to leave the club and with major European windows already closed, Turkey proved more appealing than interest from Saudi Arabia.
The transfer also offered a break from the spotlight on players at a club of United’s stature. The deal was also financially rewarding for the player, with Trabzonspor including appearance and performance bonuses that would give the player more than he earned at United.
Onana has impressed at Trabzonspor so far with a string of strong performances, even earning himself the nickname “The Wall”.
“I’m very happy, trust me,” said Onana. “I’m living the best period of my life. I can’t complain, I’m very happy to be here.”
He said support from fans has been immense and the lifestyle change has suited him.
“Sometimes I’m driving and a car cuts in front of me,” said the Cameroonian. “‘Onana, stop, I want a photo.’ I think to myself, ‘Yes, but we can do this in another way.’ But when they see me, they’re happy, and so am I.
“It was difficult at first, but now I understand. They are my men, I love them, and I love this feeling. Because they are very passionate. It’s a wonderful thing.
“It’s something you can’t describe if you’re not here. But the time I’ve spent here has been perfect for me. I’m happy to be here. It’s a different lifestyle, but it’s great. Truly incredible, amazing.”
Reports suggest Trabzonspor have indicated to the player’s representatives that they would be open to extending his stay beyond the current loan. However, the initial deal, does not include an option or obligation to buy. Any permanent move would require fresh negotiations next summer.
United would be unwilling to sanction any move outrageously below the €51m they paid for him in the summer of 2023. Meanwhile, Trabzonspor’s record transfer fee is just under €7m.
