Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) made history as the first French team to claim a global club title, defeating CR Flamengo in a nail-biting penalty shootout.

The European champions started strong, with João Neves hitting the side netting from a Vitinha free-kick and Flamengo’s Agustín Rossi making a crucial save to deny Lee Kang-in. However, PSG took the lead through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s tap-in after a well-worked move.

Flamengo fought back, equalizing through Jorginho’s penalty after Marquinhos was adjudged to have fouled Giorgian de Arrascaeta in the box.

The match remained tense, with both teams creating chances, but it was PSG’s Matvei Safonov who stole the show in the penalty shootout, saving four crucial spot-kicks.

Safonov’s heroics, including saves from Saúl Ñíguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Araújo, secured PSG’s 2-1 shootout win. Nuno Mendes scored the decisive penalty, sparking celebrations for the French giants.

This victory marks PSG’s sixth trophy of 2025, capping an incredible year with a 50th win in all competitions.

Despite a strong performance, Flamengo fell short, unable to add to their 1981 Intercontinental Cup triumph.
