Fresh talks come despite the German having signed a contract extension in May to keep him at the club until 2027

Barcelona are preparing to reopen contract talks with head coach Hansi Flick despite the German only recently renewing his deal.

The move comes as confidence in the manager increases following a turnaround in performances and results. Flick was under pressure in October and November, after Champions League defeats to Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were accompanied by poor results in the league, but Barcelona now sit top of La Liga and have re-established themselves as contenders domestically and in Europe.

According to reports, club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco are working on an improved proposal for Flick. The German signed a contract extension only in May, keeping him at the club until 2027.

But the timing of the fresh talks is deliberate. The club want to remove any doubt about Flick’s future as the current campaign enters its decisive phase. With Barcelona four points clear at the top of La Liga, Flick’s side are aiming to secure a second league trophy in his second season. They are also aiming to make progress from their Champions League semi-final finish last season.

There is equally a desire to protect against outside interest, both from other top European clubs and national teams looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup. Flick’s reputation has grown after he led Barcelona to a domestic treble last season and carried that momentum into the current campaign.

Laporta reportedly views Flick as central to his long-term sporting vision and is keen to avoid any speculation over his future from disrupting the atmosphere around the team. Locking in the coach early would also provide clarity for squad planning and recruitment.
