Striker says the pair are “examples” for longevity at the highest level

Erling Haaland has said Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi should be the blueprint for any footballer hoping to perform at the highest level.

“Of course,” Haaland said when asked by reporters if Ronaldo inspires him. “I think for every single football player on this planet, both Cristiano and Messi are an example of what you should do, how you should do to be able to perform at the highest level for 15 years in the greatest leagues.”

Ronaldo, now 40, has exceeded 950 career goals and recently extended his deal with Al Nassr until 2027, which would take him to at least age 42. Messi, 38, signed a new contract with Inter Miami through 2028 and collected another MLS MVP award after leading the club to its first league title earlier this month.

Haaland said Ronaldo’s attention to his fitness is something younger players like himself need to learn from.

“Cristiano maybe has let us in a bit more on the things he’s been doing,” Haaland said. “Look at how he takes care of his body. This is amazing. He’s 40, it’s incredible to still be able to play at that age. All respect to him for being able to do that. It’s not easy.”

The Norwegian striker reached another personal milestone this week, scoring his first goal at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid and his 55th goal in 54 Champions League matches.

“It’s special to come [to the Bernabeu] and play,” Haaland said. “It’s a massive club which achieved so much, especially in this competition. It’s special to win for the first time and score for the first time at the Bernabeu.”
